Welcome Catawba County Democrats!

2012 County Convention - Saturday, April 14 at the historic county courthouse in downtown Newton.  Registration and coffee at 10:00 am.  Meeting begins at 11:00 am.  Open to all registered Democrats in Catawba County.

Eli GlynnWelcome to the website of the Catawba County Democratic Party.  Whether you are a life-long Democrat, a newly registered voter, or an independent or Republican who is curious about our party, you’re welcome to explore our site.

We are an active, vibrant and diverse party, with over 32,000 voters in Catawba County.  We have activists across a broad range of faiths, ethnicities, incomes and philosophies.  What unites us is a shared belief that personal responsibility and wise governance can and should work together to create a more perfect union.

The word “politics” has taken on a negative meaning for many people who are disillusioned by politicians who seem be looking out more for themselves than their constituents.  And yet politics is the very tapestry into which our lives are woven.  The water you drink is political.  The schools our children attend are political.  The stores in which we shop and the food for which we shop are political.  The roads on which we drive are political.  The police officers who keep us safe are political. How many times have we heard people say, “I don’t like politics?”  And yet, when your co-workers complain about their skyrocketing healthcare costs, they’re talking politics.  When your fellow church members talk about cutting back and trying to save for retirement, they’re talking politics.  When neighbors get together to talk about how to make their neighborhoods safer, they’re talking politics.  You may not like politics, but a world without it would be anarchy.

I believe it’s our duty as citizens to be active in politics, to support honorable candidates who have a vested interest in the well-being of the community they aspire to represent.  Once they are in office, it’s our duty to hold them accountable for their actions, with the understanding that the political process works best when compromise and creativity are present at the negotiating table.

I also believe that it’s our duty to educate ourselves on problems and policies, and that means stepping out of our comfort zone, reading, discussing and listening to a variety of news sources.   Although it doesn’t always seem like it, we as a community and a country are much more united than divided.  When I talk to my neighbors and friends who are Republicans, I find more common ground than the media suggest.  I find people who are concerned about school curriculum and safety, people who want the security of knowing that an illness or accident won’t bankrupt them, people who want good roads, people who want responsible growth in our county, people who want to live peacefully with their neighbors here and with strangers abroad.  We may not always agree on how to reach these goals, but we share the same goals nonetheless.

Peruse our website.  Take a look at our calendar of events and consider yourself invited to join us.  Learn about volunteer opportunities within the CCDP.  And get to know our activists, our current office holders and our candidates, all who are doing their part to make Catawba County a better place to live, work, and play.

We are the Catawba County Democratic Party.  We're working for you.
